unofficial wedding officiant, or, the Ceremonial ceremony

From time to time, couples will ask me if I know any good, licensed wedding officiants. I pass on some names and trust they're in good hands. They usually are, but every so often they come back to me and ask whether or not I do weddings.

Their inquiry isn't unfounded. I have close to 30 years worth of experience performing wedding ceremonies. I've helped couples get married in churches, alongside a river bank and even in the back of a boat; in large venues and in living rooms. Sadly, I'm not licensed anymore so I can't perform wedding ceremonies and make them legally binding. So when a couple asks if I can perform the ceremony, I humbly and apologetically turn them down and let them seek out someone else. This has been my practice but this past summer all of that changed. I was asked to perform the wedding ceremony that was...well..strictly ceremonial; they already got married privately and this was a public expression of their love. I agreed and we worked together on an outline and a script. On their Special Day, with the Bow River in the background, I led them each to say, "I do." I was honored to be a part of it and as a result of that day, am now adding this to our service offerings.

I attend dozens of weddings every year and I'm seeing this a lot. A couple will get married privately and then host a large gathering at a later date and place for all their family and friends. They need someone to act as the unofficial officiant on their ceremonial ceremony.
